7 Easy Ways to Lose Weight Without Starving or Breaking a Sweat

Weight loss requires two things: burning calories through exercise and cutting them through smart food choices and portion control. In theory, you could create a calorie deficit by spending hours at the gym, but that’s not realistic-or much fun. And who wants to live on lettuce leaves? Instead, try these seven everyday moves to drop pounds effortlessly.

1. Fidget

James Levine, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, has spent a decade studying the role that everyday movement, or

NEAT (nonexercise activity thermogenesis), plays in metabolism. His discovery: People who tap their feet, prefer standing to sitting, and generally move around a lot burn up to 350 more calories a day than those who sit still. That adds up to nearly 37 pounds a year!

2. Keep most meals under 400 calories

Study after study recommends spacing out your meals at regular intervals and keeping them all about the same size. Eating meals at regular intervals has been linked to greater calorie burning after eating, better response to insulin, and lower fasting blood cholesterol levels.

When you eat regular meals throughout the day, you’re less likely to become ravenous and overeat.

3. Take yourself off cruise control

Increase the intensity of your everyday tasks, from vacuuming to walking the dog, recommends Douglas Brooks, an exercise physiologist and personal trainer in Northern California. “Turn on some music, add in some vigorous bursts, and enjoy the

movement,” he says.

4. Drink 8 glasses of water per day

Water is not just a thirst quencher–it may speed the body’s metabolism. Researchers in Germany found that drinking two 8-ounce glasses of cold water increased their subjects’ metabolic rate by 30%, and the effect persisted for 90 minutes. One-third of the boost came from the body’s efforts to warm the water, but the rest was due to the work the body did to absorb it. “When drinking water, no calories are ingested but calories are used, unlike when drinking sodas, where additional calories are ingested and possibly stored,” explains the lead researcher, Michael Boschmann, MD, of University Medicine Berlin. Increasing

water consumption to eight glasses per day may help you lose about 8 pounds in a year, he says, so try drinking a glass before meals and snacks and before consuming sweetened drinks or juices.

5. Step it up–and down

Climbing stairs is a great leg strengthener, because you’re lifting your body weight against gravity. In addition to taking the stairs at every opportunity, try stepping up and down on the curb while you’re waiting for the bus or filling your gas tank, says Brooks.

6. Use grocery bags as dumbbells

Letting someone else load your groceries or carry your suitcase is an opportunity missed for strengthening and calorie burning, says certified coach Beth Rothenberg, who teaches a class for fitness professionals at UCLA. “Carry your groceries, balanced with a bag in each hand, even if you have to make several trips,” she says. “And pack two smaller suitcases instead of one big one, so you can carry them yourself.”

7. Eat 4 g of fiber at every meal

A high-fiber diet can lower your caloric intake without making you feel deprived. In a Tufts University study, women who ate 13 g of fiber or less per day were five times as likely to be overweight as those who ate more fiber. Experts see a number of mechanisms through which fiber promotes weight loss: It may slow down eating because it requires more chewing, speed the passage of food through the digestive tract, and boost satiety hormones. To get 25 g of fiber a day, make sure you eat six meals or snacks, each of which contains about 4 g of fiber. For to-go snacks, buy fruit; it’s handier than vegetables, so it’s an easy way to up your fiber intake. One large apple has just as much fiber (5 g) as a cup of raw broccoli.

RUFSKIN Sport

I bought a few items from the online Rufskin store last Monday and it all came in the mail yesterday. If you don’t know what Rufskin is, I will tell you. It is a clothing designer that prides itself primarily on denim, but also makes swim-suits, t-shirts, work-out gear, underwear, and custom leather. Also, Rufskin’s target buyers are gay men. If you visit the site you could possibly be overwhelmed by the myriad of beautiful and muscular men that model their clothes (and often very little of it), but I find that it deserves such models and proves to be incredibly comfortable.

I bought three items from the Sports-Lounge section, though I will probably never wear the stuff to the gym, it is definitely comfortable enough for lounging. Besides being a little over-priced, I love what I bought. Don’t ask me why Rufskin gives their clothing ridiculous names, but I think it adds a sort of funny, quirky side to the site.

Bloody Tuesdays!

Actually its not so bad. Another 40 minutes on the rollers in the old spare bedroom, and not too shaddy. This being the end of January and the end of month one! I can;t believe that! I am actially showing some progress. I shall take my weight down on the 1st of Feb and we’ll see if there is a difference. There might be, but if not I will try to keep on with plans. Its tough to make a new routine stick, but I think this one has some serious potential. Anyone else out there have any thoughts? Anything they would like to share?

Really not very happy about the reading on the scales this morning. I really didn’t think they would be that bad. I weighed myself after going to the gym which may have had an effect as I drank a lot of water, but I just don’t see how I could have put on so much weight so quickly. I know I might have some bloating etc. at this particular time of the month, but given that I weigh myself every day and have done for a long time, I don’t remember a trend of such fluctuation.

I’m trying to channel the frustration and down feelings about it into doing something about it. It helps that at least the horrid scale reading comes after more than an hour in the gym. I know what I need to do (I say it often enough!) so just need to crack on. It is harder for me to feel positive about my body when I think it’s heavy though. I know it’s silly but that’s how I feel about it.

Day 12

This is a delayed update for Day 12 (Friday January 22nd 2010)…

Sorry for the lack of posting. The weekend has been a little hectic.

So Day 12 was a wash.

Apparently I haven’t been getting enough sleep because while I feel great during the days. More energetic than I have in weeks. It finally caught up to me Friday evening. Around 6pm I crashed on my bed while reading and didn’t wake back up until around 10ish. I had missed my workout and was starving. I decided to make Friday my free day and continue with Sculpt 1-2 on Saturday followed by Sweat 1-2 / Ab Ripper 100 on Sunday. No big deal.

I had nothing cooked and was looking for something to fill my night with since I had slept away part of the day. A friend and I went to Ale House to eat dinner (at around midnight!). Don’t worry. I ate pretty healthy. No soda or beer. Just water. A turkey burger on wheat with provolone, lettuce, and some mustard. And I swapped out my fries for a cesar side salad (maaaan that was hard).

A Raspberry Delight

So let’s talk about how to end your workout on a high note with a simply delicious treat that is also good for your mucsles that you just wore out, perhaps at the “Xcellent Solutions Fun-Fit Boot Camp!”

For those of you who like raspberry, this might be the one for you!

Servings: 1

Prep time: 3 minuts

Ingredients

8 oz light, fat-free, sugar free vanilla yogurt

1 scoop  (about 24 grams of protein) vanilla protein powder (whey or soy)

1/2 cup fresh or frozen red raspberries

1 squeeze of lime juice

Sugar substitute, to taste

3 ice cubes

Directions

1. Spoon yogurt into blender.  Add protein powder and blend at low speed until smooth, about 30 sec.

2. Add raspberries, lime juice and sugar substitute.  Blend on medium speed until well mixed.  Add ice and blend on high speed until smooth.

3. Pour into a tall glass, and savor the experience!

This one is one of my favorites and I am not a big fan of raspberries either, so that says alot!  I hope you enjoy!  To your health.

Hot Hot Heat

My fancy-pants* gym just wowed me a little more, thanks to the single-sex sauna located in the locker room (right next to the single-sex steam room and single-sex hot-tub). Until last week, I hadn’t been in a sauna since I was a pint sized, not too gangly kidlet. Almost certainly, I only went in at that age because my father dragged me in with him in the way that parents have to do when they’re watching their children. I remember it being hot.

Saunas are not particularly en vogue these days, at least in Orange County. The citizens of Irvine and the outlying cities are not busily discussing their latest sauna-stint in the grocery store, nor are they busy building little saunas into every empty plaza suite. Yet saunas are a world-wise, cross cultural heat-producing place, and I as I got out of the pool one day, I started at the little room with a steamed up window and wondered the simple question, why?

Without any preconceived notions of what the sauna could, should and would do for me post work-out, I slipped in that day curiosity had gotten the best of me. The room is made entirely of wood (sans the floor, which was gym-y tile, of course), and rests between the temperatures of 160-180. I’m a little shocked people can exist in that kind of heat, but I’m here to tell the tale. I spread out a towel and sat down, watching the walls and wondering if I was going to experience anything peculiar, like hallucinations or feeling faint at such temperatures. No dice. Just me, heat, and silence. The only irregularity I did notice was that when you move in a sauna, you feel the heat. It pricks your skin in a not entirely unpleasant way. But if you sit still, you don’t really feel much different – just warmly snug as a bug in a rug.

Mainstream known benefits of the sauna seem to be fully focused on having clear pores, clearing the body of toxins, and relaxation. Many sauna-proponents also tout that your immunity will rise because bacteria and viruses cannot survive at high temperatures (which made me think we should just send sick people to Venus. It’s hot there, right?). But what I wanted to know was what were the actual health benefits to hitting up the sauna. Would it help my running? My swimming? My overall health?

According to an article published in 2007, Effect of Post-Exercise Sauna Bathing on the Endurance Performance of Competitive Male Runners, the conclusion was drawn that, “3 weeks of post-exercise sauna bathing produced a worthwhile enhancement of endurance running performance, probably by increasing blood volume.” Look, I love science. But probably? Seriously? I’m an English person – I pick up on indecisive language if only because it’s my job.

There do seem to be a lot of cautions for sauna use, including straining your heart, extreme loss of sweat, and unpredictable blood pressure. That all sounds really fun! Except not, so if you’re going to sauna, be careful and have a good sense of your heart’s capabilities.

So, saunaing for the purpose of being snuggly and warm work out great. As for what it will do for my health…we’ll see.

*I must admit that I still cannot believe I belong to a gym that anyone might describe as “nice.” I was a Gold’s Gym person, or a fitness-center at the apartment complex person. But now, I’m a “it’s possible I’d see an Olympian here” gym person. Can’t lie, it’s pretty spectacular. Kudos to the boyfriend! Nutty, chocolatey kudos!

I can do this!

This kind of writing is a little tedious and dull for me although I feel like I’m being held responsible to what I said I was going to do when I write about it for all to see.

My hope is to remain excited about knowing where all of my money is going. I do like seeing where it goes and I believe once I come up with a system it won’t “hurt” so much to sit down and plug the information in.

Getting the system put together is the hard part for me. I have a difficult time knowing that I’m doing it “right” especially when giving the information to my accountant at the end of the year.

I guess I better get started. I actually began a lesson in Excel this morning. I learned some good stuff already and some I already knew.

Keep your chin up and do your best. I have all I need to succeed!

Keep your pace about the same length when you are increasing your walking speed, just take more steps faster. Taking strides that are too long can be unsafe and is not efficient. The power of walking comes entirely from the back leg pushing off, so don’t try to compensate by reaching far forward.

I still can’t believe they picked me

I am just a regular person who works every day. For some reason, I’ve always been shy of the limelight. Maybe it’s the old African proverb that says,”A camera can capture your soul,” or the fear of the sin of pride taking over, and ego. I don’t know but I’ve always shied away from the camera. A documentary was recently completed at the San Diego Youth Services transitional living program, Take Wing, where I am the program manager. The goal was to make people aware of the thousands of youth in San Diego living on our streets, homeless. I’ve overseen the program for the last 11 years and been a part OF the agency for more than twenty years but I still refused to be part of the documentary. That’s just not me.

But as I watched it, I was reminded of the struggle these youth have gone through. They swallowed their pride and showed that they were vulnerable and needed help. It made me think, if we need help, it doesn’t matter who we are, we should seek it. That same day, I went home and turned on CNN to find Dr. Gupta’s call for America to get fit. I wrote down the Web site casually, went to sleep and forgot about it. A few days had passed when I found my chicken scratch with the address. I had some extra time (it was 1:30 a.m.), and started sifting through some of the videos that had been submitted. It was Ricky’s video that ultimately inspired me to submit my own. The sincerity in his purpose came across and made me think: Maybe I should be doing this, for the Take Wing youth and myself.

I am always encouraging the youth to live healthy and to be healthy. I want the best for them, especially after everything they’ve lived through. It takes a lot to repair a broken spirit, but physical health definitely helps.

There were only supposed to be five competitors but CNN expanded the competition to include a sixth person. To think that CNN may have made that exception for me, it’s hard for me to believe. Now it’s my turn to be helped by training for and completing my very first triathlon. I will look to my friends, family, co-workers and of course the youth for encouragement and inspiration while I experience this life-changing challenge.

Now that I am back in San Diego, the real work begins. There is no trainer (yet) and there is no camera but I am still doing something every day to work out. Friday, I took the Take Wing youth up Cowles Mountain (highest peak in San Diego) for about a 2½-mile hike. All along the trails, they sent their words of encouragement, and it fills me.

Yesterday, my brother, the “bro-trainer,” pushed me while doing an 8-mile mountain bike ride through Rancho Penasquitos Trail. When we were done with the bike ride, I still had plans to run, but I could tell my brother had other ideas. “Go ahead and start running and I’ll ride beside you,” he said, supporting me the way only a big brother will do for his little (BIG) brother.

I am racing for the youth, my mom and for people with cancer. It’s a commitment I’ve made in my heart, although not public until now.
